Previous announcements…

As the country emerges from lockdown we are busy planning how and when to re-open this year and this update is to let you know how it’s looking. As ever, we are committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of all of our customers and crew and our plans will reflect Government guidelines.

Here’s a quick reminder of the social distancing rules that apply during the Governments 4 step plan;

April 1st – 16thPeople will be allowed to leave home for recreation and exercise outdoors with their household or support bubble if they are eligible for one, or with one person from outside their household.

16th April – 17th May: Indoors limited to the same household/bubble only. Outdoors, two households can meet, rule of six applies.

May 17th – 21st June: Most legal restrictions on meeting others outdoors will be lifted – although gatherings of over 30 people will remain illegal. Indoors, the Rule of 6 or 2 households will apply

21st June onwards: The Government hopes to remove all legal limits on social contact. We can then operate at full capacity and lift some if not all social distancing measures. Now looking like 19 July…

So, with all that in mind, here is the RiverShack plan. Please note the plan will be kept under constant review and is therefore subject to change.

**Opening Weekend – May Bank Holiday Saturday 1st May – Monday 3rd May**

Covid-19 update

Phase 1: From Saturday 1st May – Sunday 16th May

Our Passenger Boat Juno will operate a limited service at weekends running hour long round trips from Yarm Wharf starting at 11.00am. See Facebook and website for timings.

These trips will be at reduced capacity to enable social distancing and Juno will be able to have 4 groups each with their own ‘zone’.

  • Large bubble (4 of these available on each trip) – up to 6 people: £45 charge
  • Small bubble (2 of these available on each trip) – up to 3 adults / or 2 adults & 2 small children; £25

Tickets will be available by pre-booking only. As we are expecting demand to be high and because capacity is very restricted, please ensure you book early to secure a place.

Juno will also be available for Private Hire for those who want a more exclusive tailor made experience. Please contact us to discuss your itinerary and prices.

During this period we will also be offering Canadian Canoe Hire from Yarm Wharf at weekends. We have 2,3 or 4 person canoes (weight dependant) and can offer plenty of advice on itineraries to suit beginners all the way to experienced canoers. Prices are £45 half day (3 hours) and £65 full day. Sessions begin at 9.00am and 1.00pm and all safety equipment and basic tuition is provided.

We are sorry to advise that because of the safety and social distancing requirements required, we will not be able to offer our very popular Rowing Boat hire during this period.

Phase 2: From Saturday 22nd May – 19th July

Juno will operate the same service schedule as Phase 1; return trips from Yarm. However, because the rules for outside gatherings are relaxed further we won’t have to restrict the boat to zones, but her capacity will be limited to 30 people. Tickets will be available on a pre-booked and turn up on the day basis and priced individually. Please check out our Facebook page and website for details of prices and family discounts.

Canadian Canoes will be available for hire weekdays and weekends – please book in advance where possible.

Phase 3: From 19th July Onwards

From this point we expect to be able to offer all of our normal services as follows;

Juno will re-commence her normal scheduled service between Yarm and Preston Park during weekends and holidays. We will also be able to offer cold drinks and snacks on board. Please see our Facebook page and website closer to the time for sailing times and prices. Juno will also be available at other times for Private Hire.

Rowing Boats will be available for hire from Yarm Wharf. Sadly we will no longer be offering this service from Preston Park.

Canadian Canoes will also be available for hire from Yarm Wharf.

Test & Trace

It is still a legal requirement for businesses in the hospitality, tourism and leisure sectors in England:

  • to continue with track and trace work
  • and to display NHS QR code poster/s so that customers can register their presence using the NHS COVID app

When can I book a trip? Please see our booking system for details – click here

Are you accepting walk up customers?

Yes – on a first come first served basis. pre-book to guarantee a space.

What happens if I turn up and don’t have a pre-booked ticket? During Phase 1 you must pre-book trips online. From Phase 2 onwards it is possible to turn up on the day however we cannot guarantee you a ticket.

Do I have to wear a mask or face-covering?

For Juno: Current restrictions do not require masks for outdoor activities – though please wear one if you prefer or are not able to maintain a safe distance.

For Canadian Canoes and Rowing Boats: You are not required to wear a face-covering during boarding and safety briefings as we are outdoors.

Can I bring a dog? RiverShack is dog friendly and well-behaved pooches are very welcome on board.

Can I bring a bike? We will always try and accommodate bikes however space is limited and it therefore isn’t always possible during busy times. Our advice is to check ahead with us to see whether it will be possible or not.

What happens if I miss my cruise departure time? Please don’t be late for your sailing because, even though we’ll try, we probably won’t be able to transfer you onto a later trip that day.

What happens if you cancel sailings? If we cancel sailings on the day that you are booked to visit us, we will automatically refund you through our online booking system. Your payment will be credited back to your original payment card within 5 working days.

Are their toilets open on-board? There are no toilet facilities available on board. Our advice is to go beforehand!

Can I bring a picnic with me? If you wish, but please also take all your rubbish home with you and be sure to recycle!

Can I use my complimentary voucher? We are only accepting pre-purchased vouchers for Canadian Canoes and Rowing Boats at this time – please contact us for details on how to redeem them.

Can I use a voucher from the 2 For 1 Voucher Book? We are sorry but we are not in a position to accept any of these vouchers for the 2021 season as our capacity has been dramatically reduced to accommodate Covid restrictions. We apologise for the inconvenience and will review the situation when things return to normal.

What happens if I feel unwell before I visit? Please stay at home and email us to re-schedule your visit. Do not travel if you feel unwell and please remember to follow the Government guidance and do not leave home if you or someone you live with has any of the following: a high temperature, a new, continuous cough or a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste. If you or anyone in your household has any of the symptoms listed, stay at home, isolate and do not travel. Please go to for the latest information. We want to keep everyone safe, so please do not travel if you are feeling unwell or are displaying any symptoms of Coronavirus.

And finally…

We would like to say a massive thank you for all your continued support, patience and understanding as we continue to operate under these procedures/guidelines. We will update this page as the Government releases more guidance.

Please be kind and considerate to our fellow passengers, our team, and the local community. Stay safe and well.
